Мы все знаем, что chair значит стул. Это слово также значит председатель или председательница. Политика избавления от так называемых сексистских, т. е. связанных с указанием пола, терминов создала массу проблем. Слова chairman и chairwoman исчезли, и таких людей сейчас называют chairpeople или chairpersons, а сокращённо — chairs. Выражение to address the chair (обратиться к председателю/председательнице) употребляется уже много лет, а новые слова chairpersonship и chairship (председательство) неблагозвучны.He has been elected chair/to the chair of the executive committee. — Он был выбран председателем исполнительного комитета.
